Seeking A Common Sense Compromise

Several years ago, when the whole gay marriage debate was raging, I took a considerable amount of flack for my position on the topic. As a Republican, I came out of the party closet and stated that I really didn’t care if gay people were allowed to get married.

Conservatives, especially those who call themselves Christian Conservatives were screaming mad at me, and they continually hurled Bible passages at me and told me, in their holier-than-thou way that I was going straight to hell.

My response to the holier-than-thous…if you don’t think gay people should get married, don’t marry a gay person.

Problem solved.

Now, I believe it is high-time to have a serious conversation regarding yet another topic that has those same holier-than-thou, Christian Conservatives hopping mad.

Abortion.

In 2024, Republicans are winning on the topics discussed most around the kitchen table…the economy, the border and crime. Liberals lose on each and every one of those issues as their policies have created one crisis after another. Nobody is better off economically now than they were four years ago, and all it takes to realize that fact is a trip to the grocery store, or the gas pumps, and while many folks did get pay raises over the past couple of years, those extra dollars are not keeping up with inflation, resulting in having less money in our pockets.

The border is an unmitigated disaster, and every state has become a border state. The ramifications of Biden’s open border and resulting crisis will be devastating for decades, and it’s not just the explosive numbers of illegal aliens pouring into our country, it’s also the toll of human trafficking and the staggering amount of drugs that come with the illegal aliens. Even blue sanctuary states and cities and at the breaking point.

And crime? Americans feel less and less safe day by day as crime rates soar, most notably violent crime rates. Liberal soft on crime policies and their war against police have created a situation from big urban cities to small town America that simply makes law abiding citizens scared to go outside.

Liberals know that they’re losing on those topics, and that’s why they are pushing abortion as a key plank in their election platforms again in 2024. It a winning issue for them because they know that the so-called Christian Conservatives will shout down any common sense Republian candidate who doesn’t stand firmly on the no abortion at any time or for any reason island of virtue-signaling, holier-than-thou morality.

It’s time for a come to Jesus conversation with those people.

The lack of common sense and political compromise stance of virtue-signaling so-called Christian Conservatives can, and will cost Republican seats in both the House and in the Senate again this year, just as it did in 2020, and in 2022.

The Christian Conservatives won the battle when Roe v. Wade fell in the Dobbs decision on June 24th, 2022, but they lost the war in that election cycle. In what should have been a net gain for Republicans in both the House and the Senate, Republicans lost seats, losing the senate majority and creating a razor thin majority in the House. Put simply, the no abortion for any reason or at any time stance will expand the liberal majority in the Senate this year, and cause us to lose the house.

If that happens, it’s Katy-bar-the-door as liberals will rush to expand the Supreme Court to the point that liberal, legislate from the bench justices will hold the majority there for the rest of time, and there will be no checks or balances regarding the liberal dream of a politically partisan system of injustice.

Liberals are using abortion as a weapon to divide the Republican vote, and far too many Republicans just can’t see, or accept that fact, pushing instead for politicians who will legislate their religious beliefs into law. Well, guess what? We are not a theocracy. We’re a Constitutional Republic and our Founders and Framers made that very clear.

Where abortion is concerned, what we need is a compromise, and before the way-too-far right start shrieking, I’m not talking about a compromise with the way-too-far left liberals who demand abortion any time up to the moment of birth…I’m talking about finding a common sense compromise within the Republican party.

We need to speak with one, unified voice, and while not everybody is going to feel the exact same way regarding the issue, that’s where a party compromise comes into play. Along the lines of compromise, I have a few common sense suggestions.

First, let’s understand that according to the Supreme Court, and the Dobbs decision, it is now the individual states that set the rules regarding abortion, so for love of God, quit trying to make this a federal issue.

Second, as Republicans, we must set reasonable limits, and I suggest anywhere from 12-16 weeks is reasonable. It’s not perfect, but right now we have states banning abortion outright, others that have gone with the 12-16 week limit and others going lower, down to 6 weeks in some cases. If we go too low, we’re on the fringe. If we go too high, we’re aiding and abetting the liberals.

Third, our elected Senators, Members of Congress and our CANDIDATES for those offices AND the White House MUST, and I mean MUST shut the hell up regarding the abortion issue other than to state when asked, or pressed that it is now, per the United States Supreme Court, a STATE issue and NOT a federal issue.

Fourth, There must be exceptions for rape, incest or the health of the mother, and I would also add that an exception must be made if it has been medically shown that the child will not survive due to tragic, terminal issues.

Fifth, those on the way-too-far right need to realize that just because you make something illegal, doesn’t mean that it stops happening. In fact, where abortion is concerned, legislating morality is often a failure.

According to Human Rights Watch, “In countries where abortion is illegal, it is rarely scarce. In Argentina, where abortion is criminalized for most women, an estimated 40 percent of all pregnancies terminate in abortions. In Peru, with a similar legal framework, that proportion is 37 percent, and in Chile, where all abortion is illegal, the proportion is 35 percent. In Mexico and the United States, where the legality and access to abortion varies widely from state to state, the proportion is 20 percent. (All percentages calculated by using public figures on abortions and annual live births.)”

If we, as Republicans adopt a common sense abortion strategy, such as the one I have put forth in this commentary, and speak with one voice regarding the party’s policy platform (notice I don’t say individually, but PARTY here) then we can, and should be able to accurately portray liberals and the democrat party as the radicals on this issue.

I believe that by adopting such an abortion policy as a Republican Party platform, we will not only end the party in-fighting that continues to cost us election wins, but we can then also focus efforts where they matter most on the issue. Because abortion is now a state issue, rather than a federal issue, as a party, we should work to remove all federal funding and subsidizes from abortion mills like Planned Parenthood. Naturally, the abortion mills will scream about “women’s health care” but except for the overwhelming vast minority of cases where an abortion might be necessary to save the life of the mother, abortion is the polar opposite of healthcare.

If blue states want to subsidize abortion mills…let them…with tax dollars taken within their own states, and if Republican voters in those blue states don’t want THEIR tax dollars subsidizing abortion mills, let them protest at the ballot box or move to a red state.

Better yet, as abortion is a moral issue, and therefore a moral decision, abortion mills like Planned Parenthood should be allowed to sink or swim based on those seeking abortions paying for them from their own pockets, or by seeking donations from the public.

And finally, ALL Republican voters, whether they be on the way-too-far right or more moderate, need to employ perhaps THE most common sense approach to the issue of abortion and both realize and understand that there are two factors with drive the debate from the left and from the right…a feeling of moral superiority, and emotions and neither of those things equate to a winning strategy.

If you don’t want other people’s feelings of moral superiority forced on you, then don’t try to force your  feelings of moral superiority on others even if you’re sure you have the moral high-ground.

Abortion is a moral choice, and those who choose it will have to live with their choice.

Also remember, just because abortion may be legal in your state, or legal with limits and exceptions, it is not mandated.

To take this back to where this commentary began, and I’m speaking to ALL Republican voters here, not just to the holier-than-thous…if you feel that abortion is wrong, and immoral for any reason or at any time…by all means…don’t have one.

That’s the bottom line.
