This was a post by a Facebook friend last night in one of the many groups to which I belong. It was not directed at me specifically but to those in the group in general.
I understand her sentiment. I really do but I too was engaged in politics yesterday. The verse to which she refers is this; “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government shall rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”Isaiah 9:5-6
Isaiah is one of 5 books of major prophecy. It’s in the Old Testament. That verse is one to which Christians point as the foretelling of the coming of Jesus.
With all do respect to my friend and with all due respect to those who believe as strongly as she, I am not one who can leave this all in 
the hands of the lord and feel comfortable about it. I just can’t. Perhaps it’s a flaw in my faith but I feel I must be involved as I feel we must all be involved.
I was involved on December 24th. I am involved on December 26th. Why then should I NOT have been involved on December 25th?
I took a different approach yesterday, Christmas day, leaving the politics of the DAY alone and focusing instead on a Christmas Day, our nation’s FIRST Christmas day, in 1776. I don’t know if my friend saw or read yesterday’s article but, if she, or you, didn’t…maybe you should. You can simply by clicking here.
I wrote yesterday’s article not to chastise those who were taking a day off from politics but to remind them. I wanted to remind them that on that first Christmas day in our nation’s history, those who were responsible for fighting for our first taste of freedom did NOT take the day off.
I also wanted to remind folks that the fight in which we find ourselves today is, I believe, a carbon copy of the fight Washington was in back in 1776.
I have many social med
ia friends who, like my friend mentioned above, place what I believe is too much faith in scripture. This is not to say they put too much faith in faith itself rather, they seem content to leave this fight to prophecy.
I have seen no one on a ballot with the name, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. As far as I know, no one with that name is a registered voter either…except maybe in Chicago but even in that case, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace would only account for 3 or 4 votes and, most likely, they would be for democrats.
If what we as conservatives are looking for is a candidate which embodies the attributes of Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace, then I suggest we stop looking as no candidate in the running today, nor, I suggest, ever, will meet the requirements.
Yesterday, Christmas day, seemed odd to me as in yet another group, primarily a group of followers of the Jewish Faith, a dropped in to wish those there both a Happy Hanukkah and a Merry Christmas. What followed was the conversation below.
Friend: The origins of christmas is disgusting as is the origins of santa and his Krampus the christmas demon that rides with.santa on his sleigh.
Me: My goodness Michelle…such disdain for the beliefs of others. Sad really but, no matter. Merry Christmas Michelle…Happy Hanukkah Michelle.
Friend: Why should i be happy about a holiday that originally killed jews on the 25th.of December?
And yes in europe there is a Krampus the christmas demon look it up its horrible shows the true pagan origins of this day you celebrate.
Me: Michelle, I am fully aware of that part of the story…The killing of the innocents. I am also aware of more. Evil was indeed committed but not by those who followed Jesus as at the time of his birth, he had no followers. Evil was done by an evil man and those who followed HIM. Jesus himself was never a Christian but, his whole life, a Jew. To hold Jesus or Christianity responsible for those evils would be the same as holding Jews responsible for the death of Jesus himself. While some do, I do not. Again, what was done, was done by one who had faith in nothing but Rome. Christmas was originally celebrated on Dec. 25th as a direct challenge to the pagan solstice celebrations of which you speak and the image of Santa, as we now know him, again was a replacement for that of which you speak. I have chosen to look deeper…Much deeper, for the reasons behind the story of my belief and what I have found, over the many years, leads me to believe that Jews and Christians are bound together for all time. Peoples of both religions have suffered but none as much as the Jews nor for as long. To hold the past, in bits and pieces, against one another diminishes the grand future of both peoples and both religions. Both Jews and Christians believe in the same God; and as Christians, we believe Jesus was that God’s son. I have and will stand with Israel and her People…Not because of guilt over the past but because of the promise of a better future together than either of our peoples would have apart. Perhaps I am lucky, in that I have had Rabbis wish me a Merry Christmas and I, them, a Happy Hanukkah. I have had Rabbis wish me a Happy Hanukkah and I them, a Merry Christmas. To You Michelle, I wish both, again, because I truly feel it in my heart to do so. You may do as YOU choose but my heart respects both religions evenly which allows me to respect those of the Jewish faith as my brothers and sisters.
Friend: Um but it was christians that killed those jews.
It was also christians that incorporated pagan beliefs and holidays into your holidays.
A rabbi once put it like this: Originally christmas was celebrated by the killing a jew on the 25th of december. Now imagine we 200 years from now celebrate hitlerism.
Whats the difference? Nothing. Your holiday killed jews.
Take a day off from politics? No, not I, as I believe every day counts in this fight. Stop wishing folks a Merry Christmas even if most of those who read it don’t follow the religion? No, not I as it came from the heart and was meant in the best possible way.
Just as I tackled politics on December 24th and today, December 26th…And just as I stood with Israel on December 24th and today, December 26th, I will do likewise on December 25th as well.
Yesterday, Christmas day, I used Washington as an example of why I was not taking a day off. Today, again, I will turn to Washington and his letter to a Jewish congregation of Newport Rhode Island, in which our first president stated:
“The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for giving to Mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy: a policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection, should demean themselves as good citizens.”
“May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.”
“May the father of all mercies scatter light and not darkness in our paths, and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and in his own due time and way everlastingly happy.”
To this day, that Temple now called Touro Synagogue, reads aloud that very letter in Newport Rhode Island.
Now, is it any wonder, not to show disrespect to friends I have never met, that I take more inspiration from George Washington than from social media?
