The death, apparently on Saturday, of Kim Jong Il on North Korea creates an even more tenuous situation then what existed when the dictator was alive.
Video is now coming to light of people, in a state of near uncontrollable angst, reacting to Il’s death.
This, I believe, is important as it either shows the state of mind of those who have lived under the oppression of the man and his regime for so long OR it shows that people are willing to ACT like they are all broken up over Il’s death.
We know that North Korea has, essentially, shut itself off from the rest of the world and has, for years, blocked internet access. What this means is that the vast majority of people there have no idea what is happening in the rest of the world. No internet…No social media…Only state-run news service on which to rely and receive their news.
For all we know, these people have been told for years that the rest of the world is much worse off than are they and that they should consider themselves lucky to have such a leader as Kim Jong Il. What’s astonishing, in a way, is that they SEEM, if one can believe the video, to have believed it.
That the reaction would be what it is in North Korea would lead one to believe that, even while the people were starving, living in horrible conditions, they revered and possibly worshiped Il.
Now, with Il dead, power in North Korea goes to his son, Kim Jong Un.
This too presents an enormous question mark.
The kid, 28 years old and without a shred of experience in running a nation, is now in charge. We know that North Korea has developed nuclear weapons over the last few years and as far as we now, the control of those weapons is now in the hands of Un.
Here is what seems to me to be the biggest problem. Who is controlling Kim Jong Un???
It seems unlikely to me that this 28-year-old never-been-in-charge-of-anything guy is actually controlling anything now. Someone, most likely from his fathers closest advisers or possibly from the North Korean military, is pulling the strings making Un the puppet to…what exactly?
North Korea, today, tested a medium range missile in what THEY say was a test scheduled BEFORE the death of Il. To me, that seems unlikely. We have seen for decades, in times of stress not only in North Korea but in other parts of the world, dictators “testing” weapons as a show of strength.
SOUTH Korea has reason to be on high alert and if we were smart, we would be as well. With an unknown entity pulling strings and shall we say, pushing buttons, a massive show of strength, in the name of the new “leader” of North Korea would NOT be a surprise.
We must also remember, it was back in 2007 that Kim Jong Il sold nuclear weapon technology to Syria which caused Israel to immediately bomb that Syrian research site into the sand. Could North Korea now, needing money and back sided prestige, sell MORE technology? Perhaps to Iran?
Iran will, no doubt, view this as an opportunity to strengthen their relationship with North Korea and maybe get more out of it than they have before.
Clearly, North Korea has already been helping Iran but such an opportunity as that which presents itself now, would benefit both rogue states to the further detriment of the west.
Think about it. North Korea could get a much needed influx of money which would lead to the impression, in such a closed society, that the new leader was bringing a better situation to his country and as for Iran, an acceleration of their nuclear weapons program.
The IAEA has recently released a report which states Iran may well be within 2 years of actually HAVING a nuclear weapon and we know they have missiles which could reach as far as Israel now. The report also indicates they are very close to fitting those missiles with the proper warhead for a nuke.
More missile technology and/or nuke technology from North Korea could move Iran’s program ahead by as much as a year.
South Korea isn’t the only nation with a need for concern. Add Israel into that mix.
The mere IDEA that such assistance from North Korea to Iran COULD galvanize Israel’s government into making an even more timely strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities in much the same way as they did with Syria.
Power shifts in a place like North Korea rarely shift to a more conciliatory situation. Add in the fact that the guy taking power has no idea what he’s doing, no experience and must, to keep the appearance of a steady transfer of power, be a puppet and you have what will most likely be an escalation of tensions.
The world was a very dangerous place with Kim Jong Il in power.
It may well be more dangerous with him dead.
North Korean official statement: Kim Jong-il died bravely while slaying a dragon on a golf course while shooting -38 with 11 holes in 1.
