So, Obama has finally set the time and place for his big economic plan speech and wouldn’t ya know it, was going to be on the same night and at the same time as a republican candidate’s debate. Oh, he said it was just a coincidence of scheduling and certainly not, as some in the media and around the blogesphere believed, a direct sign of disrespect and a transparent political move.

Of course it wasn’t – but  Boehner said no way, due to “security” reasons, and now it’s been reset for Thursday evening September 8th where it will compete against the opening night of the NFL.

Now, those in the media and on various blogs are all talking about how Obama blinked and the republicans got their way and they are comparing this upcoming speech to his speech to rally support for Obamacare because THAT speech ALSO took place before a joint session of congress.

They’re missing the true point of this whole thing.

Obama, fresh off his vacation to Martha’s Vineyard, will gather up his teleprompters and his “plan” and deliver this speech to a joint session of congress on the evening of September 8^th with televised coverage.

Why?

Well, his mouthpieces will undoubtedly regale us with the importance of this speech and how Obama wants to present his plan to the people and how he wants all members of congress to start implementing it forthwith.

Here’s what those mouthpieces won’t tell us.

This is the Golfer in Chief’s Mulligan!

For non golfers, a Mulligan is a free shot, a do over of a bad shot which a golfer purchases for a fee of some sort or allowed by an agreement with fellow duffers. Shank one into the woods…use a Mulligan to retake the shot and hope for a better outcome. Hook one into the sand? Use a Mulligan so you won’t have to try and blast it off the beach.

This speech is Obama’s Mulligan!

His first shot went so deep into the trees there was little hope of ever finding it and no way to play it where it lay. That first shot had “Sputnik Moment” spin all over it. Then the WTF (Winning the Future) wind caught it and it started drifting way too far to the left.

That first shot bounced off of the green jobs tree, rolled under the tires of 1 million electric cars in the next 5 years and came to rest behind a high speed rail pipe dream.

That shot is so far gone you couldn’t find it with a GPS.

It did ALL of that without somebody yelling “YOU LIE” during his back swing.

So what IS the Golfer of the United States to do after such a horrible shot on the back 9?

Dig out  Mulligan.

Now the thing with Mulligans is that you have to take the shot from the same place as the first shot – and since the State of the Union speech was hit into the forest of despair in front of a joint session of congress and national televised – so too must the Mulligan be hit!

Hence, a second shot at a disastrous State of the Union speech.

Obama’s Mulligan.

While Obama was busy looking for his Mulligan card, lo and behold, the republicans got tired of waiting and decided to play through.

The republicans have created and passed a budget, something which neither Obama nor the democrats have been able to do. Republicans created and passed not 1 but 2 debt plans…something neither Obama nor the democrats have been able to do. Heck, one of those republican plans was headed so straight down the fairway it would have averted the S&P downgrade but Obama and the democrats shot it right out of the air.

So, the republicans, tired of waiting for Obama and the democrats to actually tee up a plan, have played through with a plan of their own ahead of Obama’s Mulligan shot.

So, now that the speech has been reset for the 8th rather than for the 7th, maybe it’s Boehner who shanked one into the tall trees.

Boehner SHOULD have simply backed the debate off by an hour thus allowing all 8 candidates to watch Obama’s Mulligan and then shoot eagle over what could very well be another Obama bogey but what’s done is done.

What can we really expect from this Mulligan? Probably another slice off into the far left side of the fairway. He’s going to talk about jobs. Will he mention his jobs czar who is sending a major division of HIS company to China or how his DOJ is telling the Gibson Guitar company to outsource their product?

Will he talk about the need to invest (spend) on green energy just days after a solar company in California declared chapter 11 following Obama’s trumpeting of them being a model of American innovation and handing them 535 million dollars of OUR money? That’s a DOUBLY bogey.

Will he mention his new economic adviser and his brilliant academic career while ignoring the guy’s lack of real world experience? Kruegman wants a value added tax on every aspect of production of goods and for services which would be on top of the taxes we already pay. Suppose he’ll try to sneak a tax hike like that into his Mulligan?

Will he say he’s going to sign on to the pipeline running from Canada to the gulf as a way to create jobs thus making many of his own base mad enough to explode?

What about trying to extoll congress to work with him rather than against him insinuating that by not doing so they are just bad Americans? Fair share?

Expect to hear about an “Infrastructure Bank” which would put Americans to work “Right now” repairing our nation’s roads and bridges. That’s a hook into the rough as it will take considerable time to establish such a “bank” and from there, a he’s going to need a wedge to get out of the “shovel ready” sand trap.

Chances are, Obama’s going to wish he had more Mulligans.
