Never has such an anticipated speech by a President been so completely forgettable before it’s even been presented. Obama will deliver his great jobs speech before a joint session of congress and while liberals will no doubt stand and applaud at every little thing and will cheer each at every spending measure Obama announces, the response will be silent and that silence will be deafening!!
Republicans expect so little from this ballyhooed speech that they have already decided not to even offer a rebuttal.
Nancy Pelosi, deposed from the speaker’s chair last November is not happy about it either. Nancy has her former speaker’s panties all wadded up as she has let it be known that such a non rebuttal is an affront to the President.
Oh my.
Presidents speak before a joint session of congress for the State of the Union or if they want to wage war. Outside of that, such a speech is rarely given especially on matters of domestic economics.
So, when Obama calls for such a venue and then makes a federal case of the date and time, one would expect the secrets of area 51 to be revealed but that simply will not be the situation this time. Obama is expected to jab at republicans for not playing along with his spending desires and for standing in the way of…something. He will likely ignore the fact that jobs bills have been passed through the house and held at bay by a liberal controlled senate.
Spending will be a big topic and high on Obama’s wish list. More shovel ready jobs will be announced though if he uses THAT phrase, Obama will have jumped the shark. He will call for an infrastructure bank where states can go to get money for road and bridge repair.
There’s a good chance Obama will also call for more unemployment coverage and more spending on certain entitlements but liberals should not hold their collective breath lest they turn as blue as their states. Obama will certainly mention his new econ/academic wizard, call for some sort of tax relief for the middle class, probably bring up some cut in corporate taxes but also have some slick trick in store to increase revenue…maybe a VAT on top of other taxes.
There will be talk of yet another bailout for state and local governments, more talk regarding stimulus “investment” in businesses and so on but really, what of this have we not heard before. Most of it, to the tune of trillions of dollars has been tried and has failed. This time out, his pricetag will be a modest 300-500 billion dollars in new spending. Whoo hoo.
Not everybody on the right side of the aisle is ignoring the upcoming big speech.
Congressman West has offered a few pointers to Obama.
(WASHINGTON) —Congressman Allen West (FL-22) released this statement today as America awaits President Barack Obama’s jobs initiative speech Thursday night:
“Just this past week, we have learned there has not been one new net job created in the United States of America.
Somehow in three short years, we have taken a bad situation and exacerbated it to epic proportions. It is not just the debt and deficits which have grown to astronomical proportions in these years, but now we face something which is a complete anathema to our principles- an attitude towards business which is completely anti-growth.
Up to this point, we have had a President who is unwilling to admit his economic policies have failed.
My question for the President is, ‘What is the purpose of Thursday’s address, since you want all of Congress to sit attentively? Will we finally receive a written plan, or must we again seek to score or evaluate yet another speech?’
I ask the President to please address the following Thursday night:
- Structural tax reform included but not limited to a flat tax; 21 % corporate rate, no loopholes or subsidies, 13% to 16% personal tax rate with only child tax credit and mortgage interest tax deduction
- Reducing regulatory burdens to allow private sector growth, encouraging reasonable, logical regulations
- Eliminating capital gains, dividends and estate tax
- Ceasing quantitative easing policies
- Establishing fiscal policies that stimulate long term economic job growth, not more government “investing” Keynesian policies
- Targeting economic growth in urban inner cities with focused policies (16.7 % adult black unemployment, more than 40 % black teenage unemployment)
- Taking a scalpel to the federal government in order to reduce its size and scope
I challenge the President tomorrow night, not to give Americans a politicized campaign speech, but to stop the blame game, and to stop the bullying. Now more than ever, Americans need a principled, focused leader who is willing to admit his mistakes, and bring forth real, tangible solutions for getting this country out of the worst economic crisis in a generation. I will be awaiting the President’s solutions.”
Congressman West, with all due respect sir, don’t be too surprised if your common sense suggestions fall on a pair of giant deaf ears.
The part of all this which is so amusing is the Pelosi response to the republican’s refusal to respond. “The Republicans’ refusal to respond to the president’s proposal on jobs is not only disrespectful to him, but to the American people.”
So allow me to make sure I have this right. NOT criticizing Obama is a show of disrespect to Obama and the American people.
Yes…how DARE we not employ the effort to rebut what is sure to be a self rebutting speech. HOW DARE we NOT go to the trouble of pointing out to those who already know full well, what will be wrong with this speech. Why, it’s downright disrespectful to the American people!
Is that about it?
I have an idea which is sure to make Pelosi beam with glee.
Below is the rebuttal to Obama’s speech. Absolutely no disrespect intended.
Please click on the podium for official response to Obama’s speech. Thank you and may God Bless America.
Great article, Craig! The official response at the end is perfect!
